This week I have been discussing with lecturers on how I can make my project more innovative, this stems from the issue that I am making a FPS game and that this genre of game has been covered to death by developers. Also with the main aim of my project being level design I was concerned that focussing to much time on trying to make the project unique would draw my attention away from what I was planning on achieving, which was to make a quality set of levels. My lecturers understood this issue and we discussed possible ways to still meet that innovative bench mark for the assignment, yet do it in a way that would reinforce the level design. We came up with the idea of having the focus be on telling the narrative of the game using environmental story telling, meaning that I use the environment and level layout to progress the story instead of traditional methods, such as objective markers. Using environmental story telling has already been done in multiple games, but I will be lo0king at this in a more direct way, answering the question of Can a game tell a story using only environmental story telling. We also discussed how I am planning on taking on multiple roles for this project i.e. Games Designer, Level Designer and audio designer and how this approach to the project is innovative by its self, as I will need to implement different development strategies then would be traditionally used in a game development studio.
Overall I think the innovation will come from the unique techniques and approaches that I use as a solo developer. For me though the priority for this project will always be to make a piece of work that shows off my abilities as a level designing and showing companies what I can offer them.
